Smartphones – Mobile Working Devices Sees Mobile Data Traffic Overtake Voice Traffic for First Time

Friday, March 26th, 2010

For the very first time, mobile data traffic appears to have overtaken voice traffic on mobile networks in December last year, according to network company Ericsson. The exponential growth and interest in smartphones has been the major cause for mobile data traffic to spike, with social media networks and mobile working applications the main cause for this shift.

It is perhaps understandable therefore, that both mobile carriers and manufacturers are continuing to drive their products towards social media and working mobile phone accessories as an area of considerable potential income. Some 200 mobile operators worldwide are promoting its Facebook mobile products, with over 100 million users connecting to social media networks through their smartphones.

The consumer market is now hooked on fast 3G mobile broadband and wireless connectivity, and the pressure is on networks across the planet to maintain their standards in order to develop and maintain their consumer base. Plans are already afoot to roll out 4G networks capable of even quicker download speeds but the UK’s dated infrastructure in comparison to the United States means that this is unlikely to reach Britain’s shores for some time.

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Google’s impending Android-powered smartphone, the Nexus One has been delayed for release in the UK until mid-April, allowing its competitors to steal a march on them in the British market over the coming weeks.

The HTC Legend has already received glowing reviews from experts and analysts, and Google launching their very own smartphone has proved a more time-consuming decision than previously expected.

The Nexus One has been available to purchase in the United States since January, although consumers and industry experts have criticised Google’s decision to make the handset available only through online web sales.

Smartphones – Success Leads Recovery in Mobile Market

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Global analysts Gartner have revealed a 0.9% decline in total mobile phone sales between 2008 and 2009, with 1.211 billion units sold worldwide. Nevertheless, the most promising statistic to come out from the research was the sale of smartphones continuing to lead the partial recovery of the mobile market – posting an 8.3% sales increase in the final quarter of 2009.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, three of the largest global mobile phone manufacturers registered fewer unit sales throughout 2009. Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola experienced a decline in sales, with their market shares dropping as much as 3-4% in a single calendar year.

Carolina Milanesi, Gartner’s research director, said: “The mobile devices market finished on a very positive note, driven by growth in smartphones and low-end devices.”

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

First impressions of the new HTC Legend suggest that this latest Android 2.1 powered device will be the ultimate successor to the HTC Hero that has proved to be a smartphone success in the consumer market. Mobile Phones – Smartphones Coming Under Attack From Hackers

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

In the age of an ever increasing mobile Smartphone market, there appears to be increasing concern that Smartphone users are being targeted by hackers with the intent of stealing bank details. The underlying problem appears to be that mobile users are entirely unaware of the security concerns using mobile phones to carry out confidential banking and other activities.

An independent survey by You Gov targeted Smartphone users to pinpoint exactly how much confidential information is stored on their handset. The results of the investigation suggested that over 60% of Smartphone owners contain sensitive information regarding online banking details and secure log-in information. Perhaps even more alarmingly, a mere 7% of these users have adequate security applications installed to protect them from security breaches.

These figures will alert hackers even further, with viruses being developed to attack even more unaware victims. With the news of the HTC Tattoo and T-Mobile Pulse hitting the shelves this week and the fresh deals for Orange and Vodafone to sell Apple’s iPhone and increase circulation, there is set to be a significant increase in Smartphone consumers in the coming months.

Mobile Phones – The Rise of Cheaper Smartphones on the Horizon

Monday, October 5th, 2009

The attraction of the latest smartphones in the UK mobile phone market has reached fever pitch, with the latest Apple iPhone 3G S and HTC’s Android handsets selling in significant numbers despite their high-end values. Yet consumers will be heartened by the news that there is a rise of cheaper mid-range smartphones on the horizon.

Britain’s first pay-as-you-go Android smartphone has been released this month, with the T-Mobile Pulse hitting the shelves from October 2. The cost of a SIM-free handset is significantly cheaper than its HTC and Apple competitors, and gives consumers hope that other manufacturers will be forced to follow suit.

For those interested in specifications, the T-Mobile Pulse also compares favourably with the iPhone, with the largest Android touchscreen of 3.5”. Its 3.2 megapixel digital camera is also a competitive addition, with the same photo quality of the HTC’s Hero and Magic handsets. The early signs are that T-Mobile’s latest Android-powered mobile phone will eclipse the success of the T-Mobile HTC G1 launched last year.
