Mobile Phones – Apple Records Sales of 8.7 Million iPhones in Q4 2009

Apple smartphones continue to do a roaring trade after record revenue sales in the final quarter of 2009. A combination of iPhone and Mac computers saw earnings boosted by up to 50% and despite increasing competition from smartphone and computer manufacturers it is their most profitable quarter so far.

Apple revealed that it had sold 8.7 million iPhones – a 100% increase on last year’s unit sales. Nevertheless experts had previously predicted sales over 9 million but this remains a figure not to be sniffed at.

Overall revenue improved by an impressive 32%, raking in more than $3 billion more than the previous quarter. With Apple’s new tablet device set for release in the coming months these latest figures seem to have been revealed at just the right time to show a period of great strength.

Mobile Phones – Sales Fall by 6.4% at Close of 2009

Despite recent reports from mobile phone retailers revealing reports of record sales, data from analysts GfK suggested that mobile phone sales fell by up to 6.4% at the end of 2009. Statistics showed that sales increased by 0.5% in week 49 in comparison to 2008, but the final two weeks of the year saw a stark drop.

It is a puzzling result considering the fact that major mobile phone retailers reported record sales during the Christmas period.

An Orange spokesperson revealed: “While footfall was down over the period due to the snow, it did not matter as Christmas started early for us thanks to a strong device portfolio and Christmas Gift Box.”

Smartphone Sales Set to Outperform Mobile Phone Sales by 2012

It is almost to be expected with the array of devices now available, but smartphones are predicted to outperform mobile phone revenue by 2012. Results from a recent study by Infonetics Research have shown that smartphone sales are providing an increasing source of revenue for the mobile industry.

The success of the latest smartphones such as the iPhone 3GS, the Palm Pre and HTC smartphone duo, HTC Hero and HTC Magic has contributed to a 14.5% increase in the number of smartphone units sold this year worldwide. Experts have suggested that the spread of 3G high-speed data networks has played a significant role in the growing of attraction to smartphones.

Smartphones have the ability to complete an unprecedented number of day-to-day tasks, outperforming a mobile phone on virtually all fronts. Smartphone consumers can boast the ability to browse the web, send and receive e-mail, use integrated music software and snap with a digital camera – a versatility that a mobile phone can only dream of.
