Mobile Phones – Orange & T-Mobile Merger Given Official Go-Ahead by EU Commission

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The long-awaited decision regarding the future of the proposed takeover between global mobile phone carriers Orange and T-Mobile arrived to conclusion this week. The European Commission has granted a conditional go-ahead, with a networking sharing agreement with 3 and a reduction in its share of the combined 1800MHz band the main terms of the agreement.

Interestingly the EU Commission could not find any just cause to reject the merger, with no direct concerns in relation to the mobile phones market and provisions for all mobile telecommunications products.

The agreement from the European Commission has seen the Office of Fair Trading withdraw its request to appeal, after the Commission smoothed over fears from the OFT that the approaching merger would make the UK mobile phones market weaker and uncompetitive with fewer carriers for consumers to choose from.

Mobile Phones – Orange & T-Mobile Merger Delayed by Investigation

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

The projected plans to merge mobile phone operators Orange and T-Mobile into the UK’s biggest carrier have been put on hold due to British regulators’ concerns about weakening competition in the market.

This week the Office of Trading (OFT) has encouraged the European Commission to investigate the potential merger as it had the probability of “significantly” reducing the competition in the UK mobile market.

Both and Orange and T-Mobile had initially hoped to complete the amalgamation by the end of this month but mobile phones analysts predict that the true extent of this review could see it put back to as late as December.

Mobile Phones: Orange to Launch Twitter TV Deal Across Europe

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

The fast-emerging presence of Twitter across the latest smartphones and mobile phones has allowed Orange to take advantage of its popularity. Orange owns TV services across France, Spain and Poland and it has struck an agreement this week to allow TV viewers a tweet-as-you-watch service through TV sets.

This latest development could improve interaction throughout a host of entertainment events such as live football, shows and news programmes. The entire integration of Twitter into the Orange mobile phone portal means that users will now be able to upload and share photos via Twitter as well as the traditional text message method that has become the trademark of the Twitter brand.

Orange’s current social media service, Social Life, offers a one-stop portal for users to connect to the likes of Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. However, this direct implementation of Twitter will mean that Orange subscribers will not need to access their Twitter accounts via a mobile application, providing a smooth transition into people’s everyday lives.

Mobile Phones: Orange Sells Record 30,000 iPhone 3GS on First Day

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Within hours of becoming only the second UK network to supply iPhone 3GS handsets, Orange revealed record sales figures of over 30,000 on the day of release. This figure is thought to be a landmark figure as a new first day record for the British mobile phone industry.

The latest success for Orange somewhat makes up for the fact that the France Telecom-led company missed out on securing exclusivity for the iPhone in the first place and has rewarded the company for its extensive pre-order process.

Orange is basing its marketing ploy on the fact that its overall network coverage is significantly greater than its competitors, providing greater connectivity for iPhone consumers on the move and in the office. Its pricing is comparatively similar to its high street rivals, O2, but Orange executives hope that its service quality will attract further consumers.

If both companies can safely negotiate through this period the official merger is likely to commence in the first half of 2010.

This move remains an undoubted landmark in the British mobile phone industry as the merger will create the UK’s largest operator with a significant market share.

Mobile Phones: Mobile Phone Recycling Service Launched by Orange

Friday, November 6th, 2009

With many online companies now providing an environmentally friendly mobile phone recycling service, Orange has moved to keep up with the times with its latest ‘recycle and reward’ scheme available within all Orange stores and is open to all members of the public, not just Orange customers. The recycling scheme is not only targeted towards mobile phones, it is offering to trade old laptops and personal music players for cold hard cash.

Statistics heard coming out of Orange suggest that two thirds of the British public have old mobile phones stored away at home gathering dust. Little do they know that this staggering figure of over 90 million unused handsets equates to a value of around £450 million.

The basic premise of mobile phone recycling is to refurbish mobile phone devices back into usable condition. Whenever possible, companies are grading handsets from ones that are available for use straight away to ones that are not suitable for reuse and need to be fully recycled. Much of the money recouped from this service is invested in improving environmental credentials, carbon footprints and projects to reduce carbon emissions.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

In a move that is set to stun the British mobile phone market, T-Mobile UK and Orange have outlined plans to complete a merger that would see the duo become the nation’s biggest mobile network.

A deal has been brokered between Orange owner, France Telecom and T-Mobile UK leader, Deutsche Telekom with the merger expected to engulf 37% of the UK mobile phone market. This will dwarf the coverage of Telefonica-managed O2 who currently enjoy a 27% share of the UK mobile phone network.

The move will be officially signed and sealed in November, with the duo promising to bring substantial benefits to its UK customers. With over 28 million customers using the merged service, it will be imperative that they provide better network quality and improve customer services to cope with demand.
