Mobile Phone Users – Ofcom Reveals Service Comparison Information

Friday, March 12th, 2010

In the tightening global economy, British watchdog organisation Ofcom has revealed figures that will encourage mobile phone users to make greater savings on their bills by switching to a mobile tariff that is better suited to the individual needs of the consumer.

With the vast selection of tariffs available amongst a variety of mobile phone carriers there is no excuse not to find a deal that offers the optimum level of talk-time minutes and texts. Purchasing a tariff that includes thousands of free minutes and text messages obviously sounds advantageous, but if you end up using only a small percentage of this allowance that is a considerable amount of money wasted.

This latest service comparison document, Consumer Focus and the Communications Consumer Panel is designed with the simple idea of directing mobile consumers to the most cost-effective monthly deals and services.

Mobile Phones: Will ‘Classic’ Feature Phones Survive the Smartphone Craze?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

As we approach the end of Q4 in 2009, the demand for smartphones continues to grow week by week. Dominant ‘classic’ feature phone manufacturer Nokia faces increasing pressure from the smartphone craze, with the likes of Research in Motion, Apple and HTC making their mark.

Finnish giants Nokia have changed tactic however, with their aim to consolidate their portfolio of smartphones. John Strand, CEO of Strand Consult, believes that the line between feature and smartphones has blurred due to a “technology shift” and not because of a tirade to extinguish the need for low-end ‘classic’ feature phones.

Strand admitted: “Only a few customers deliberately purchase smartphones. Most want a reasonably-priced phone with smart features. Whether a customer ends up with a smartphone or a feature phone is a matter of coincidence.”

Mobile Phones: Android Operating System Still Largely Unrecognised

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Despite the increase in brand reputation for Google phones, the Android operating system still remains largely unrecognised by consumers according to research company IDC. It would appear that although consumers are now well acquainted with the latest Google branded smartphones, they are less in tune with the Android operating system that powers the majority of Google phones.

This news has been released despite the increase in market share of Google Android across Western Europe in Q3 this year. Its market share has risen from 4.2% to 5.4% in the most popular region for mobile usage.

IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo admitted: “Consumers steer clear of Google’s OS and sell-out is below everyone’s expectations. Consumers recognise the Google brand but still do not understand what Android is.”

With the end of the year and Christmas approaching, the availability and cost-effective value of entry level smartphones will attract many throughout the festive period. Nokia has tried hard to catch the eye of the consumer with its Nokia 6700 Slide, which offers a fun, flexible alternative to mobile internet devices.

Despite coming with a modest 2GB microSD card, the phone is capable of holding up to 16GB of memory. Mobile Phones: iPhone 3G Secured by Tesco Mobile Operator

Friday, November 27th, 2009

It appears that the iPhone 3GS will become the most common smartphone of 2010 as yet another mobile service provider has unveiled plans to sell the Apple device. Tesco Mobile is the latest to grab the opportunity to boost its client base by revealing a pre-registration page for consumers to sign up and receive their handset in the lead-up to the Christmas period.

Tesco Mobile is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator that is run on the O2 network. Tesco is famed for providing text and call bundles that have been attractive to the pay-as-you-go market; however it will be interesting to see what kind of deals they engineer for their latest premier handset.

The iPhone 3GS will be available on Tesco Mobile on a pay-as-you-go and pay-monthly basis, which may attract users who do not wish to enter into a contractual agreement, using their smartphone as and when they please. Although not as advertised as many other mobile phone networks, Tesco Mobile was recently voted as the number one network for customer satisfaction by Which? Magazine in early 2009.
