Mobile Phones – Android Set to Claim Runner-up Position by 2013

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Analysts at IDC have predicted that Android-powered mobile phones will claim the runner-up position in the market, behind Symbian, by 2013. IDC’s Worldwide Mobile OS 2009-2013 Forecast and Analysis suggests that Android sales could reach up to 68 million on a global scale.

With just 689,000 Android units sold in 2008, it appears to be quite a steep increase in popularity for Android software – an annual growth rate of 150.4% to be exact!

This ever-increasing demand is music to the ears of the likes of Google and HTC who have taken on the Android operating system in recent months for some of the most successful smartphones – most notably the HTC Hero, HTC Magic and the upcoming Nexus One.

Mobile Phones: Android Operating System Still Largely Unrecognised

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Despite the increase in brand reputation for Google phones, the Android operating system still remains largely unrecognised by consumers according to research company IDC. It would appear that although consumers are now well acquainted with the latest Google branded smartphones, they are less in tune with the Android operating system that powers the majority of Google phones.

This news has been released despite the increase in market share of Google Android across Western Europe in Q3 this year. Its market share has risen from 4.2% to 5.4% in the most popular region for mobile usage.

IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo admitted: “Consumers steer clear of Google’s OS and sell-out is below everyone’s expectations. Consumers recognise the Google brand but still do not understand what Android is.”

Mobile Phones: Google to Release Its Own Android Smartphone?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Not content with allowing its applications and services on Android smartphones, Google appears ready to prepare its own branded smartphones under the Google banner. This is a potentially major step for Google as it seeks to make its own way in the global smartphone market.

Over the last twelve months, Google has appeared happy to allow the likes of HTC and Samsung to carry the Android flag, but there are increasing murmurings suggesting that Google is already in talks with a manufacturer for a handset to be available this year.

This latest move suggests that Google is serious in its ambition to provide open-standard mobile internet devices to customers on a global scale. The most exciting enhancement of a Google branded smartphone is that these would be purchased ‘unlocked’, giving the consumer the freedom to pick and choose their network provider and at the same time undercut Android releases from the likes of Motorola and Dell.
